First of all you need to know where you want to go , what's your max budget and which cruise line you want to go on .
Here are the list of what good cruise lines are:
Celebrity : Is known for it's food and entertainment . When I went on the Celebrity Infinity the food was great and the entertainment was good too , but it's vessels are a bit small and their staterooms are a bit cramped.
Princess : Is known for it's massive , beautiful ships (Ocean Princess and Pacific Princess are smaller vessels so not to worry, some of it's ships are smaller than others) and great service. Sadly it's food is normal and it's entertainment is a little dry at times.
Holland America :Is a good cruise line because of it's staterooms and it's service. Note to self , that the Holland American line is your professional cruise line . It's professional but it doesn't have any great features . I would recommend Princess for kids , adults for Holland America line .
Carnival: let's say that most of the time this cruise line is fun if you pick the right ships. 50% of their ships are fun .... the other half not so. I suggest that you should do some research before you go on a carnival ship, say cruise critic is a very good review and tracking site.
Royal Caribbean : I will admit I have never gone on a Royal Caribbean ship. So I can't say .
And then after you pick which cruise line to go on , you need to know if you want a big ship or small ship. In the websites of cruise lines you will find all their ships. Take a look at these:
